Two days ago Liam Pitchford beat Ma Long in the seventh set.
Liam Pitchford's Backhand
Arguably the best backhand in the world used this weapon to catch Ma Long off guard many times. Liam often won or put Ma long on the defensive by going down the line with his backhand.
Liam has the ability to switch play from cross court to down the line with a minor wrist movement. This movement is so minimal that even the best players in the world struggle to read it and often are caught out. Harimoto uses the same shot but with a flatter trajectory.
Levels of play:
Ma Long, is 2 levels above Liam so how did Liam manage to beat him?
I hate to take anything away from someone but Ma Long was a level below his par. Ma Long, a recent dad, looked a little slower than usual and had a defeated attitude in the seventh set. It was the first match for him and Liam personally admitted Ma long was not on his best form.. Liam's level upped knowing hes playing the best player on the planet and stepped his game up a level to stand a chance. The match became a spectacle and Liam took full advantage of the situation winning 11-6 in the last.
Taking full advantage and believing
Most players would give up 2-0 down to Ma Long but Liam sensed Ma was not at his best and kept fighting. 2-0 down and he wins the first point a truthful CHO sends Ma, the signals that Liam has not thrown the towel. That belief enabled Liam to take that set. And at 2-1, 10-6 down Liam maintained belief and found a way to come back and win that set, levelling the match.
The battle had begun and Liam broke the Dragon's belief, going 5-0 up in the last.
We may not be as accomplished as someone and we may not have their skills. But if we don’t believe we will never take advantage of a given situation because our self-belief will halt our chances.
There’s always a way if you allow your mind to find it.
